Meet Mike

Career highlights:

I studied physics at university and was immediately attracted to nuclear, so I studied for a nuclear specific Masters degree as entry into the industry. I joined Atkins as a graduate and have worked in a wide variety of sectors within the industry for almost every UK client. I am now a Capability Lead for Safety and Environment in Atkins, managing a team of ~80 people. I previously was a Nuclear Institute’s Young Generation Network (YGN) committee member for a number of years, and Chaired the YGN in 2019.

What are the best things about working in the nuclear sector?

Knowing that what I do is strategically important for the UK, and supports world-wide net zero efforts.

How have mentors influenced your career progression?

I’ve really benefitted from mentors helping me see the bigger picture, when at the start of your career you don’t see all the pathways available to follow.

Do you have a personal performance/well-being tip to share?

Trying to be great at something that isn’t your strength isn’t necessarily a valuable way to expend energy. Really recognising your own strengths and pulling on people’s collective strengths in a team is really powerful.
